Chobham 38 Cobham 12

Report: Saturday February 7th 2015, London South 1

On Saturday Cobham travelled to near neighbours Chobham for this London 1 League match. There are no easy games in this league and with Chobham sitting in second place and looking to consolidate their league position this game was no exception.  For Cobham this match was again a stern test of their ability against a side looking for promotion and more importantly a win would be one step nearer a mid table finish.

Cobham kicked off on a damp cold afternoon on a firm pitch facing a slight breeze and were immediately put under pressure by a lively Chobham side. After only two minutes following several phases of play by the home side a penalty was awarded and calmly kicked from 45 metres.

This early score revitalised the Cobham side and from the kick off they played with renewed vigour. The forwards well lead by Joe McVey secured good clean possession from all phases of play which enabled the threequarters confidently served by scrum half Ryan Saunders and expertly marshalled by Sam Watkinson to severely test the defences of the Chobham players. In defence the whole team were able to nullify the Chobham attacks and prevent any scores. During this period both sides attacked from all parts of the field with good intent with and the match at times degenerating into a kicking contest between the 25 metre lines. This contest between two committed sides was living up to its pre match assessment of the spectators from both clubs. The match was played between the 25 metre lines with both goal lines being threatened resulting in a number of try scoring opportunities being squandered.

After 30 minutes the deadlock was broken. Following a period of possession and good cohesive attacks from both the forwards and backs Chobham were forced to desperately defend their try line. Good clean possession from a scrum near to the Chobham goal line enabled full back Jean Louis Gravier to create an overlap, and pass to winger Patrick Williams who deftly beat his opposite number on the outside to touch down near to the touch line. This was excellent finish to a period of sustained pressure from the whole Cobham side. The conversion by Sam Watkinson failed.

From the kick off Cobham continued to play with skill and determination but came under a sustained attack from Chobham which took play deep into the Cobham half. Eventually a penalty was conceded and converted.

The remaining minutes of this enthralling and close first half saw Cobham attack the Chobham defence at every opportunity. This culminated in an excellent break by the skilful and determined Jean Louis Gravier which breached the Chobham defence. This was a try scoring opportunity which did not come to fruition and ended with s scrum for a knock on. The referees whistle blew for half time of an absorbing contest between at this stage two evenly matched opponents.

Half time Chobham 6 Cobham 5

Chobham started the second half with renewed vitality and enthusiasm and were attacking the Cobham line from all parts of the field with breathtaking cohesion and intent and began to show the form that could result in their promotion to a higher league. After many attacks during which a Chobham forward crossed the try line a quickly taken tap penalty by the scrum half saw an overlap created for the right wing to score a converted try unopposed.

Chobham were now playing skilful fifteen man rugby and threatening the Cobham try line on many occasions Although Cobham’s defensive line held the constant attacks of this lively Chobham side the inevitable penalty was awarded and the resultant kick in front of the posts was successful.

Cobham although reeling under the relentless wave of attacks stubbornly and skilfully fought their way back into the Chobham half with forwards gaining good possession enabling the backs to force play into the Chobham 25.  It was now Chobham’s task to defend their line. The penalty count was now favouring Cobham who chose to kick for position to severely test the Chobham try line. With a dominant line out the resultant maul was formed and driven over the try line for the hardworking Joe McVey to touch down for a well deserved try. The conversion by Sam Watkinson was successful.

From the kick off Chobham mounted a number of attacks forcing Cobham to desperately defend their line. This produced a number of penalties and a yellow card for Doug Rodman who with his back row partners had been the cornerstones of this competitive match both in attack and defence. The resultant penalty was kicked.

                                                                                                                                Chobham 19 Cobham 12

Now down to 14 men the Chobham attacks were relentless and eventually produced three more scores in quick succession. Chobham’s defence was only tested with sporadic Cobham attacks which were quickly nullified. The first of these three scores was the result of skilful interpassing between forwards and backs resulting in an unopposed score which was converted.

With 5 minutes of the game remaining Cobham fought back and took play deep into the Chobham half. These attacks were confidently dealt with by this efficient Chobham side and the assault on the Cobham try line resumed. Again good interpassing by this confident Chobham side saw an unconverted try being scored with the final whistle blown shortly after.
