2010/11 Season

Season Review- to see fixtures info click here

The A team have had a successful year winning three tournaments, coming runners up in three and winning the plate at home. So, basically every competition we entered we got to a final – well done boys! We rapidly became the team the other sides didn’t want in their half of the draw!

We had a strong core squad at the start of the year and it’s testament to the quality of the whole age group that by the end of the year the coaches had difficult choices to make. By the last festival 40% of the age group had appeared in an A festival.

After Christmas we won the Effingham and Leatherhead and Richmond Festivals, being unbeaten in both. Indeed, by the time we got to the finals of the Surrey As we had played 14, won 12, drawn 2 and lost 0. We were runners up at the Surrey A Festival, beaten in the final by a very strong Farnham team after an extremely long day of tough games – 10am to 4.25pm!! And finally, to round off a very successful season, we won the Worthing A Festival with only half the squad that had represented us at the Surrey As.

Congratulations boys on a fantastic season! We look forward to a very strong squad to take forward into U10s.

The U9 Bs have had a very successful season where the boys although cautiously at first made an enthusiastic transition to their first season of contact rugby. What was most impressive was that on the odd occasion that our boys came off “hurt” they quickly dusted themselves off and were keen to return and participate. They should all be commended for this.

Our focus in line with Paddy’s original mail at the start of the season, was on participation development and enjoyment.

Although we went to win tournaments we gave priority to all boys participating. As evidence of this we had 12 of our B squad of 16 play for the A squad in tournaments and 4 of our starting B squad move to be permanent A squad players. Additionally we had C team members develop into our squad during the season and become central players as we developed throughout the season.

On skills development we focused on a variety of areas.  In particular our rucking and mauling developed to such an extent that in games we were always positioned to win. As such we were always competing to win tournaments.

Our festival performance was excellent particularly in the latter part of the season. The boys won a strong festival in Guildford, coming second at both the Surreys and Farnham and competing in the semi-final of the other festivals entered.

For the new season we will obviously focus on the new areas introduced (Competitive line-outs and scrums). However one area I would love the boys to develop in is passing. Sounds simple but I would say this is an area we do not utilise effectively, which is understandable. It will be great to see “fast flowing rugby” where we get more movement of the ball. A high risk approach if you want to win tournaments as we will no doubt make a lot of mistakes in passing…………..however it will be beneficial for the boys longer term and hopefully we will see benefits as the season progresses.

Finally a quick thank you to all the parents and coaches who helped out this season.
