Season Review

Well – what a couple of weeks that was.    As we stand here at the end of the season save for the excitement of the tour, I can only reflect on our youngsters and what they have achieved with a sense of pride.  We took on a vast amount especially towards the end of the season and each and every player stood up to the challenge and represented themselves, their team and their club in exemplary fashion.  We won some tournaments gaining a fair amount of silverware along the way, we reached the finals on many occasions and throughout were a real challenge to most of the teams we competed against.  There is no doubt that the experience the players have had of challenging competition, physical endurance, mental acuity and sheer determination is what this sport is all about and at which our youngsters have excelled.

That we suffer poor refereeing decisions or unfair play does unfortunately blight most sports and of course deflates young hearts and minds who are trying their level best.  We certainly have had our fair share of this along with the associated emotions and unhappiness it causes.  However, it is a test of character to be able to stand up in such situations and play on with head held high and it is my understanding that, despite some fairly obvious shortcomings by certain match officials in certain games, that our U10’s acquitted themselves like true sportsmen.  I could not ask for more and it is a testament to all of the players and the coaches that this was the case.  Maturity and self confidence are the cornerstones of what we are seeking to instil in our youngsters and in this I believe we have achieved success.

The match reports of our recent competitions have been published on the web site along with some superb pictures by Chris Ruggio who is an unsung hero in bringing these to us of his own free will.  The previously advised Worthing festival of 10th April has been cancelled so there is no further activity this season until the tour.  For those coming on tour, I look forward to all that it promises to be.

It therefore remains for me to say that it has been an absolute pleasure coaching your youngsters during this last season and I would like to commend all of the coaches and the managers for their untiring support in all that we have achieved.  I especially appreciate all of the support that you as parents give to your child in being a part of Cobham rugby.  We have some great plans for the further development of our club in the coming years which is a measure of a thriving sporting community.  I will be arranging a social event after the tour for all parents and will be in communication on this in due course.

Regards

John Craig
