U9 Fixtures & Reports 13-14

Esher A Festival Sunday 2 March 2014

Team: Dominic, Harry, Freddie P, Freddie S, Guy, Monty, Stephen, Joe, Charlie, Sam.

Result : P4  W1 D2 L1

Game One v Esher  - Lost 0:3

Esher turned out to be group winners. If we had played Esher later in the tournament the result may well have been different.

The early exchanges showed good defence by both sides. A sustained period of pressure led to Esher’s first Try.

Errors in attack (running into touch, care of the ball in contact) by Cobham led to a number of unforced turnovers and subsequently 2 further tries.

A slow start but lots of promise for the games to come......

Game Two v Old Ruts  - Win 4:2

Old Ruts kick off and score running through the middle.

Cobham seem awake now, tackling well. Old Ruts driven into touch. Turnover leads to Guy bundling over to score. 1:1.

Good tackling by Cobham but Old Ruts break through and score. Monty breaks through and levels the score at HT.

An excellent second half by Cobham with good defence sees Guy score twice – good body position to score ‘running low in water’ to quote Bill McLaren!

Game Three v Old Reigatians - Draw 2:2

Good start by Cobham Harry scores off the KO

Good tackling by Cobham turnover ball Freddie S scores in corner – disallowed. Old Reigatians regain the ball and eventually score to level the match.

We then started a pattern which if broken would have seen us win the last 2 games.

Rather than move the ball towards the space and the  overlaps we tended to run back down the line of the ball as received from the scrum half towards the original breakdown point.

The commitment to the tackle and running without fear into contact was considerable by the whole team and for this my previous point falls into insignificance and the boys should be applauded........ back to the game.....apparently you can hand off even with 2 hands on the ball – this became rule of the day – a close second half saw tries to each side with Charlie scoring for Cobham.

Game Four v Reigate - Draw 2:2

Cobham continued with good quality attack and defence in this match. A flat pass by Cobham is adjudged and therefore was forward – turnover – Reigate score.

Monty breaks several tackles to equal the score before half time.

A try by Reigate breaks the deadlock in the Second half. One additional pass towards the space may have seen us score a number of times but eventually and deservedly  Stephen and Guy combine well down the right and Guy; low again, scores in the corner.

In short an outstanding effort by all the boys on the pitch. Well done.
