13th April 2014 - Surrey B Festival

Game 1- Cobham vrs Reeds

A fantastic performance from the Cobham team at the Surrey U11 B Festival. The boys did not lose a single match and finished top of the 8 teams in the competition (at least we believe they did although it was difficult to tell as no results were announced!).

The day got off to a great start with clear blue skies. A welcome relief from the freezing horizontal rain at the last B Festival in November. With tent soon up and the team registration done, it was soon time for the first game against the Old Enemy, Reeds.

Thankfully, the boys did not live up the Cobham tradition of starting the first game half asleep and launched themselves at the opposition from the moment of the ref’s whistle. With play firmly established at the Reeds end of the pitch, Cobham spent the entire first half testing the Reeds defence and not once allowing play to move their own end. Noah put the first notch on the scoreboard breaking out from a successful ruck to run down the touch line and score. A perfectly executed conversion by Zach put Cobham at 7:0 at half time.

The start of the second half and Reeds came out fighting only to meet a solid defence from Cobham and some fierce tackling, notably from Jamie H. An excellent pass out from Mikey to Gabriel gave him the space to score the second try of the game. Another successful conversion from Zach took the score to 14:0 to Cobham. Try number 3 was set up by a long touch line run by Jamie Curtis. A pass across to Matt and he found the space to cross the line. Conversion number 3 from Zach made it 21:0 to Cobham. The remainder of match showed some fantastic defence from Cobham against some, at times, determined attack from Reeds. The best tackle of the game award certainly went to Olly sending the other player back about 3 meters!

Final score 21:0 and a brilliant start to the competition (sorry, not allowed to use that word!)

Game 2 - Cobham vs London Irish

The boys did a great job of taking the momentum from the Reeds game uninterrupted into the next game against London Irish. A strong team, but no match for the solid Cobham defence preventing them from getting any traction. A quick breakout from Olly, took Cobham to an early 7:0 lead after another clean conversion from Zach. The next play saw a some great teamwork from Jamie C, Henry B and Olly with Mikey running the final leg to score the second try of the game. Yet another perfect conversion from Zach (this is getting repetitive) took Cobham to 14:0 at half time.

The second half saw a further four tries from Gabriel, Matt S (2 each) with set ups from Jamie H, Mikey, Chris and Toby. The final try from Gabriel was a heroic dash from the half way line catching a surprised London Irish team completely unawares.  Another clean sweep of conversions by Zach saw the game finish in a 42:0 victory for Cobham.

Game 3 - Cobham vs Farnham

An off guard start to the 3rd game left Cobham 0:7 down soon into the game. Farnham played well with a solid defence giving Cobham very little chance to create opportunities. Despite some fierce attacking and excellent team work, the first half finished 0:7 down.

One “rousing” pep talk later from Mark and Cobham took to field for the second half a changed team. A quick pass out from the scrum by Jamie H to George W was passed on to Matt S who made a brilliant run to the try line to equalise at 7:7  (after Zach had done his magic on the conversion). With their mojos restored, Noah went on to score another try to bring the score to 14:7. Excellent, rucking by Mikey Wilson.

Full time result 14:7 to Cobham and a big sigh of relief from parents and coaches.

Game 4 - Cobham vs Cranleigh

A good defence by Cranleigh managed to keep Cobham at bay for most of the first half. Despite some spirited attempts, notably from Jamie C and Olly, the half finished at nil:nil.

Into the second half and it looked as though the pattern of the first would continue, when disaster struck! A lapse in the Cobham defines allowed the Cranleigh winger to run up the outside and score an impressive try against Cobham. A successful conversion left Cobham 0:7 down and only a few minutes of the game to go! When all looked lost, the boys lifted their heads and made a final hard drive against the Cranleigh defence. Chris, Duncan and Jamie C all played a part in getting the ball to Mikey Wilson who landed a try to save the day. One last conversion from Zach and the full time whistle blew on a 7:7 draw.

All in all, a great day’s play from Cobham U11 Bs, and a welcome day in the sunshine for parents and coaches.
