Pulborough 'B' Festival - 9th November 2014

A mixed squad of mostly C squad players and a few B squad players took trip to the  Pulborough B festival.

Our first game came and went without us troubling the Haywards Heath side too much. We were disjointed in defence and unable to put many attacking phases together. We were playing as individuals, not a team, and lacking in the extra effort needed at B standard. The ‘Heath’ were worthy winners by 2 tries to none.

Next up were Pulborough and the boys put in a display of heart and spirit. Most pleasing to the parents and the coaches alike. The defence was solid with outstanding hits by Duncan and Daniel which raised the belief of the whole squad. Attack was fluid and the boys were unlucky not to score more than the 3 tries to none.

We now had a team belief and the boys were playing with heart. The coaches had now worked out where to accommodate all the players to get the best out of them, but they still needed to play well in the arm wrestle with Horsham. Nip and tuck throughout but I felt we were always going to prevail as the lads didn’t want to let each other down. They won by 1 try to nil.

The final was again against Hayward Heath. The locals in the know had told me they were fielding A squad players a plenty so our team talk reflected that. Unsure of how our boys would react we watched this cobbled together side run, pass, tackle, ruck and generally put it to Haywards. We were still the 2nd best side but the boy’s character and passion nearly bought about a shock as we definitely rocked the more experienced Haywards Heath side …. but sadly we lost 1 try to nil.

I'm not great at name checking but ‘big up’ to Sam Mulder who put his first ever competition tackle in, even after confiding in me that he was worried. Big hit, ball dislodged into touch and celebration like he’d won the world cup…. now that’s what days like these are for !

Great credit to all who played today, especially the less experience players who got stuck in and didn’t let their mates down. Many were played out of position and asked perform unaccustomed role but never once did they moan. A worth while outing, which I know the kids enjoyed as much as the onlookers.

Thanks as always to parents for their support and Karin for her 1st aid work.
