Reeds A Festival 6th October 2013

Another beautiful day for rugby on Sunday as we travelled to Reeds for the second festival of the year.  A late withdrawal left our pool with only 3 teams so the organizers extended our games from 7 to 10 minutes a side.  First up Chobham.  After shaking off the cobwebs early on, the boys started to get in the groove with some great rugby, moving the ball deep into Chobham territory several times.  The forwards were dominant in the rucks and scrums allowing our backs to get the ball wide with some real consistency.   One such drive resulted in a penalty scrum deep in the Chobham end where another big push upfront allowed Bryn to take it in for a score.  More great defence in the second half and a blocked kick from Hoff kept us in control of field position and the flow of the game. With only a minute or so remaining, Chobham was able to pin us deep off a great kick, turn us over and score a try to tie the game.

Final Score:  Cobham 7 - Chobham 7

Our second pool game was against Battersea Ironsides.  Clearly the boys came with their A-Game and knew they'd need it.  Excellent rugby all around in the first half! Some of the best defence of the season from James, Jamie, Josh and Tim as they covered, tackled and turned Battersea over numerous times, frustrating Battersea players and coaches to no end.   While outsized, the forwards controlled things with exceptional effort and clearly wanted it more than their opponents.  Joe, Zac, Sam, Fabian and Rob took their cue from hooker Alfie and refused to give up ground all game.  The first half ended scoreless but the message had been sent, Cobham was here to play!  Midway through the second half Bryn showed some Hollywood potential faking a penalty kick while sneakily executing a tap-and-go. He bounced off a few players before weaving his way in for the try.  A missed conversion left the door open for Battersea but they would not be able to recover any momentum as our swarming defence once again held them in check.

Final Score:   Cobham 5 - Battersea 0

The Cup semi-final saw us pitted against London Welsh.  The first half was hard fought by both sides and some great saving tackles by the backs kept us in it.  Solid rucking allowed us to move the ball down the pitch several times but the Welsh defence would not break.  More of the same in the second half until a good Welsh kick pinned us deep allowing their forwards to turn us over and score a last minute try for the win.

Final Score:   Cobham 0 - London Welsh 7

I am sure the boys left Reeds with a bitter taste in their mouths, hopefully not to be forgotten before next week’s festival at Rosslyn Park.  While it was a bit like the Clint Eastwood film, The Good the Bad and the Ugly, the effort was certainly there and the boys should be proud of some great rugby.
