Reeds B Festival - 13th October 2013

It is official, our endless summer is over. No regrets and today we moved into the tough muddier season which is not for the faint hearted, boys and parents alike.

This was our brave squad out today:

Ben, Chris, Gabriel, Joshua G, Mikey, Olly, Ryan, Will O, Zach Wa, Duncan, Fabian, Henry C, Jake, Mark and Toby.

Parents: a large and unrecognisable bunch of umbrellas and rain gear turned up to stand huddled like penguins on the side lines Coaches – Mark ( drowned rat of the day with a little help from the rain and the boys tipping the tent cover on him) and Rory, and Karin on first aid.

Match 1 Cobham 14 Farnham 7

Hard Rucking and a tough and muddy start but we soon settled in the second half with 2 tries and two conversions. Tries by Fabian and Gabriel and unlucky not to get a third by Josh Garner in the far corner. 2 of 2 conversions by Zach.

Match 2 Cobham 49 Warlingham 0

The boys really came together in this match and dominated the possession through superb scrumming and good ball out to the back line, converted by them nearly every time.  We ran in 4 tries in the 1st half and another 3 in the second half. Both Ben and Fabian ran in 2 tries each after some good tight passes in soggy conditions. Further tries from Toby, Will O and Gabriel all showing the benefits of putting your head down and running starlight.  3 of 3 conversions from Zach especially good given the soggy ball and ground.

Coming off a high we endured a painfully long break with the boys having to take refuge in the clubhouse to warm up and dry out a little.

Match 3: Cobham 14 Reeds 5. This was the important Cup Semi final and we got off to a slow start. Reeds had us pinned back and we were blown up on numerous occasions for penalties. Reeds scored first and the pressure was on.  It seems that pressure is just what we needed and we took control for the rest of the game with 2 tries in relatively quick succession.  Tries. Y Will O and Fabian after some good driving by the pack.  Zach continued his great form with 2 of 2 conversions.

Match 4 The FINAL: Cobham 0 Farnham 7

What a match. It was nil nil and nail biting stuff until the very last play of the game  - when Farnham were awarded a try which they converted before the final whistle blew. Gutted!! The boys defended like crazy including 2 possible tries held up and not awarded to Farnham. What we can learn is that you cannot win games on defence alone. Next time we face Farnham we will need to make sure that we get and retain more possession.
