Reeds Development Festival - 17th November 2013

The Reeds development festival was aimed at developing players, and so was not a C festival as such. It took place on Sunday the 17th November on a nippy, dry autumnal day. The U11 pitch was on the smaller of the Reeds fields, surrounded by trees and houses - and provided what felt like an intimate venue for a challenging day of rugby.

The squad on the day was comprised of Alex, Alfie B, Daniel, Drew, George S, Matthew K, Nicholas, Ryan, Seb, Zach Wr, Jake, Luke, Nathan, Duncan, Fabian and Toby.

The festival was organised into two pools. Cobham was placed in the second pool along with Farnham, London Welsh and Sutton & Epsom. The boys played very well in the pool stage scoring a total of six tries with none conceded. So Cobham ended top of the pool and our semi-final was against the runners-up of the other pool in the form of Guildford. Sadly, there was only one try scored in that match by Guildford and so our day came to an end.

Mark Rackett was coaching the team as Salv was unavailable on the day. Mark's view was that the boys had played really well as a team, with fantastic scrumming and rucking at the breakdown. He felt that the back line need to work on their decision making as there was a lot of kicking that didn't quite work and a few times when an earlier pass would have yielded a better result. But great team spirit and some things to work on over the next few weeks.

The match stats are as follows:

Match 1 v Farnham: Final score 14-0 to Cobham. Tries by Toby and Fabian in the second half, both converted by Alfie.

Match 2 v London Welsh: Final score 28-0 to Cobham. Tries by Fabian, George and Zach in the first half. The first two converted by Alfie and the third converted by Zach. The fourth try in the second half by Jake and converted by Zach.

Match 3 v Sutton & Epsom: Final score 0-0. This was clearly a much tougher match and Cobham spent much of the match defending very well under pressure. There were a few moments where the boys put S&E under pressure but unfortunately their defense was equally strong. There was some terrific scrumming on our part for which the forwards should be congratulated.

Semi-Final v Guildford: Final score 0-7 to Guildford. Very tough match where Cobham struggled to get the back line working. Jake took a bash to the head but thankfully was ok.

Thanks to whomever fixed the tent - it really made a difference being able to gather and sit inside it in the cooler weather.
