Sutton and Epsom A Festival - 24th November 2013

We arrived with some trepidation following last year's sub zero slug fest in the mud (at which we were quite good), to find we were on higher ground on a nice big pitch. A round robin format meant our objectives were clear, and we would be home in time to see the Irish fail to make history. The only concern was James Merry's swollen foot, but he and Richard stayed on admirably to support.

1st Game v Effingham & Leatherhead W 28-0

A much improved Effingham side started strongly, but we stayed patient and defended well. After building some pressure, Mossy took a quick tap pen and the Hoff drove over for the first score. Then, before half time Brownie touched down in the corner after some fluent play and a flat pass from Lammers who was pulling the strings nicely. In the second half we began to move through the gears. The forwards dominated the loose, and Coxy went on a mazy run. Bryn took another tap pen, and Brownie went to the corner for his second try. Finally, from a scrum against the head, Bryn attacked the line and went over for our fourth try. All 4 tries were successfully converted by Bryn.

2nd Game v Sutton & Epsom W 28-0

Another dominant display, against small but spirited opposition. The pack began well, and after a line out steal the tank that is Sam Millberg took it on, and on, and when he finally fell to earth Alfie picked up and touched down from a yard out. With a solid platform the three quarters were now starting to move the ball around, and Coxy finished after a Rory Underwood style dummy down the right hand touch line, following another solid scrum. The defence was outstanding, with Jamie Harris proving one of the toughest pound for pound competitors. Bryn scored after half time, following several phases, and Sam scored the fourth, after scrum half Max made a dart down the blind side. Another four conversions from Bryn made it a repeat result.

3rd Game v Guildford D 0-0

After a two match break, our intensity dropped off a little, and we met a Guildford pack who were competitive, particularly in the scrum. Jamie, Rob, Hoff and the rest of the pack battled hard, and there was some great cover tackling by Lucas and Coxy when Guildford threatened to break out. Coxy was forced in to touch just before touching down, and despite exerting steady pressure we couldn't break through, and the game finished scoreless.

Guildford and Reeds had already drawn, so despite this result, the tournament was still there to be won, and the last game was effectively winner takes all versus Reeds.

4th Game v Reeds W 14-0

By now, the pack, in whichever combination took the field, was beginning to become seriously unpleasant to play against. Sam continued to move rucks and mauls single handed, and Zach put in some trademark strong runs. All around the physical battles were won. Following swift hands across the back line Coxy stooped to take a low pass which wrong footed the defence and he turned on the gas to score. The kicking had been intelligent all day, and when Lammers put up a probing kick towards Reeds line, Coxy followed up with the tackle, and Bryn'squick tap from the resulting penalty saw Coxy cross the line again. Both tries were converted by Lammers who took over duties. No score in the second half, but we continued to boss the game, and the tackling from Josh, Andall of the backs meant we never looked like conceding a try.

So, we finished clear tournament winners, without a single try conceded. No less than deserved by a 100% group of boys. The rugby had great shape, with a strong forward platform and dynamic back play, and the commitment from everyone was first class.

All of this would not be possible without Karen's organisation, and the coaching of Spence and Geoff. Spence was moved to say "that was quality rugby" as well as " that made the hairs, on my head, neck, arms all stand up.." And not forgetting, during the last game "be calm Max".

Well done to everyone. Team:
