Report of the Haywards Heath match on 14 December 2013

Six try Cobham storm to victory

Haywards Heath 0   Cobham 41

Cobham continued with their good form of last week with another sparkling performance away to struggling Haywards Heath.  A try by Max MacDonald in the opening minutes laid the foundation for a confident display and Cobham ran in two more tries in the first half to establish a substantial 18 point lead at half time.  Haywards Heath who have not won a game so far this season put some good moves together and were threatening on occasions but Cobham’s extra pace in the three-quarters and commitment up front were overwhelming, running in three more tries in the second half for a convincing win.

Cobham kicked off at the start of the match with a light breeze behind them and quickly took possession on the half way line for Max MacDonald to chase up on a probing kick ahead, beating the cover defence and touching down in the corner for the first score of the match (0-5).  Cobham made inroads into the Haywards Heath half through a good run by Charlie Mortimer, ably supported by Max MacDonald, and Cobham were rewarded by a penalty goal, Tom Farrelly slotting home to extend Cobham’s lead (0-8).  The pressure was maintained as Cobham gained the advantage of possession and territory forcing a lineout in the Heath 22.  After winning the lineout Cobham moved the ball quickly to midfield where winger Max MacDonald was able to step on the gas and speed his way through the home side’s defences to score Cobham’s second try, Tom Farrelly’s conversion attempt hitting the post (0-13). The home side tried to respond but were kept out by a solid Cobham defence and soon Heath were down a man yellow carded for an infringement at the breakdown.  Cobham took full advantage, Doug Rodman powering his way over the Heath line from a clean catch and drive at the lineout to make it 0-18 at the break.

Heath kicked off the second half but soon went further behind from a Tom Farrelly penalty in desperate efforts to contain a Cobham attack (0-21).  Haywards Heath then embarked on their best session of the match, moving the ball along the line at pace but were unable to make inroads to a fast covering Cobham defence.  Cobham ran the ball back the full length of the field in an impressive display of controlled re-cycling and from a lineout close to the Heath line skipper Guy Sears crashed over the line for Cobham’s fourth try, Tom Farrelly converting (0-28). The home side were again penalised at the ruck and Tom Farrelly extended the visitors’ lead with another penalty (0-31).  With confidence levels now reaching their peak Cobham opened up the game even further with the forwards providing a steady stream of good possession for the pacy three-quarters to thrive on.  A sharp turn of pace by James Mitchell opened up gaps in the Heath defence and after some impressive inter-passing, Jean Louis Gravier was able to beat the cover defence and dash over the line for an excellent try (0-36).  Heath kicked deep to relieve the pressure they were under, but time and again Cobham ran back at pace, first Jean Louis Gravier stretched the Heath defence and then James Mitchel carved a way through only to be downed by a high tackle.  Still the Cobham backs kept up the pace, Charlie Mortimer and Matt Thomas combining well in the centre to take play into the Heath 22.  In the final scrum of the match, five metres from the Heath line, Cobham moved the ball wide and when temporarily halted the ball was slipped to Robbie Kennard who rounded of an excellent performance with Cobham’s sixth try (0-41). With this result Cobham further strengthened their mid-table league position and on this form will be more than a challenge for most teams in the league in the second half of the season.
