RFU ELRA Referees Course

ELRA REFEREES COURSE (in 4 parts)

to be held at Cobham RFC ~ January 2014

    • Tuesday 21st January ~ 19:30-22:00
    • Thursday 23rd January  ~ 19:30-22:00
    • Tuesday  28th January ~ 19:30-22:00
    • Thursday 30th January ~ 19:30-22:00    Note: all 4 evenings must be attended.

The ELRA (Entry Level Referee Award) offers an outstanding introduction to refereeing a game of rugby union, equipping you with the skills and confidence to do so effectively. The ELRA is recognized by the RFU as a formal refereeing qualification and is the basis for advancing your refereeing career with the London Society of Rugby Football Union Referees should you wish.

The course, delivered by Bob Ockenden from the RFU, is really enjoyable and the coaches and players who participated recently found it extremely beneficial to their overall understanding of the game. Bob has trained many of the country’s top referees and acts as timekeeper in Premiership matches most weeks.

Cobham RFC really needs more ELRA trained referees to help in the Youth Section and with the Mini Festivals. We recently lost three key referees who moved to France, Chichester & Nottingham University. The bigger the pool of referees, the more we can spread the load and contrary to popular opinion refereeing is fun! To encourage and support referees, the club promotes rugby’s core values and has zero tolerance of negative touchline behaviour. We work hard to ensure that every club member be they player, coach or parent understands this, along with visiting clubs.

We are happy to offer a limited number of places on the course (subject to availability) to youngsters, to benefit their Sports Studies courses. Minimum age is 14.

It is a mix of classroom and pitch work (Sessions 2 & 4 are pitch based so kit required). There is some testing to be done but please don’t be put off by the ‘exam’ element; it’s all very relaxed.

If you would like to do the course, please contact me as soon as possible with the following:

    ·                                     Your name

    ·                                     Your role (coach/manager/parent/player)

    ·                                     Your age group(s)

    ·                                     Mobile phone number (or something you answer!)

I will then send you details of how to apply. Maximum of 20 can attend.

The cost of the course, £40, will be refunded only to Cobham RFC coaches and those who willing to become Club Referees for the Youth Section and Mini Festivals. We offer a good in-house support structure and Continuous Professional Development by holding informal Referee Education Evenings,  delivered by Bob.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
